This sample is an exercise in diplomacy. I was to write a persuasive letter to a boss about a problem at a job I've had. I was to then present a possible solution.
Subject: Concerns over the order screen timer,

Dear Ron,

I have been working at (Resturant) for a couple years now and have noticed that orders are bumped off our monitors after fourteen minutes regardless of whether the order was filled or not. On a normal shift there is no issue. The orders are filled well before this deadline and if the timer does run long that there’s still a paper receipt. The problem arises when the receipts end up lost in the hectic kitchen.

What this results in is the order being lost completely. I’ve seen people approach after twenty-five minutes wondering if their food was ever coming....

I was asked to research a non profit org and the surrounding issues. I chose Habitat For Humanity of Dallas.

This project was my lowest grade out of the entire technical writing class.
3. Physical Health

A family that is homeless spends much more money on health care than if they were in adequate housing (Burg). The environmental stressors combined with the emotional stress of being homeless lead to greater frequency of physical illness. A child in a homeless single family is more likely to develop respiratory infections, among other health problems.

To quote a speech from John Reckford, a longtime expert on housing issues. Habitat for Humanity’s chief executive officer:

“Candace's baby boy, Daniel, had become really sick. He started having asthmatic seizures so severe that he had to be rushed to the hospital.

He would always recover rapidly, but each time he returned home, he would relpase. Eventually, a city health inspector identified the cause of these mysterious attacks… toxic black mold around the apartment's windows.

Candace knew she had to get Daniel out of that apartment.”

After Habitat for Humanity intervened, a new home was provided and Daniel’s health significantly improved.

I was assigned to write a portion of a help manual for a word processor of my choice. I chose Google's document editor, it seemed more interesting and more of a challenge to me. In this sample I explain how to text wrap an image

I feel this one isn't my best material, I was still getting my lead out as a writer. To view something closer to the original layout the download link to the full document is at the bottom.

4. Text wrapping an image

To text wrap, place your cursor near the desired area and click. Then go to Insert, Image. A window will pop up asking you for some details on your image choice.
The default inline image placement can be a tad messy
The usage of text-wrapping can be used to smooth the overall document appearance.
Click the image that you have just placed.
Select the image by clicking near the inside of the border of the image with the mouse.

There will be two options:
“In-line with text” and
“Fixed position”

Using “Fixed position” will enable the text to wrap around the image regardless of where the image is placed.

Then, simply drag the image to the area where you need it. The text will automatically displace around the image. You can tweak the placement at this point to fit your design needs. Simply drag and drop the image and the text will realign.

Comparison Memo

12/9/2012

In this assignment I was required to write a a document that compared two brochures, explaining the differences. The document had to be as neatly organized as possible to be read/processed quickly.
SUBJECT: Comparison on two documents concerning bipolar disorder among younger people.

This memo discusses the differences between two documents.
1. The first document: “Bipolar Disorder In Children And Teens”.
2. The second document: “Bipolar Disorder in Children and Adolescents: A Guide to Diagnosis and Treatment”.

Both documents cover the topic of bipolar youth but each has a different set of assumptions about the potential readers. These assumptions affect the overall design of the document.

What is the audience and purpose of each article?

The first document
appears to be designed for the parents of a youth that potentially has bipolar disorder. Phrases such as “call your child’s doctor” and “Do not stop giving your child medication without a doctor’s help” indicate the assumed relationship between the affected and the reader of the document. The first document is designed to help a parent understand the importance of medical expertise in the subject of bipolar disorder. Frequent warnings appear in the brochure “ask your doctor before...”

The second document is much more authoritative, and presumes that the reader will be a medical professional. The second document is aimed at medical professionals looking for a reference of common medicines listed along with positives and negatives to each choice. Each medicine is put into a separate section with relevant information attached for a professional to weigh their options.

This project was to write a manual to teach someone how to use the website builder on Weebly.com. This project demanded the most work out of the entire semester in the technical writing class. Below is a sample page with a download link for the complete document attached below.

Modifying header text

To modify text, you’ll simply need to click in the text area to be changed.
A gold box will appear around it indicating your selection.
Then type the new text.
1. To change the font you’ll need to click on the Design title tab.
2. Then use the Design Options item tab.
3. Then, to the right of that will be a new list. Click Site Title.
Note in #3 that there are other types of text that can be modified.

In this example, I’ve changed the header font to something more professional looking. Pacifico looks too much like the third grade. It simply won’t make the cut.

Click the blue arrow next to the font name and choose a font from the drop down menu.
Almost there..
Much better.

This project was a simple proposal that I had written for a technical writing class. The task was to convince the professor that I had a plan and was qualified to write a brochure (the brochure was never actually completed).
The purpose of the brochure would be to entice both beginners and experienced people to attend the event. They would have to be convinced that the instructors are knowledgeable and that the environment is a good one to dance in freely. Information on the instructor’s experience would accompany their photograph to ensure beginners of the expertise they will be working under. A person that is more experienced would appreciate being told about the size of the room if it is large, or perhaps the choice of music. The choice of music can be divisive but from my experience at various events the safe bet would be to announce a strictly classical environment. More modern music choices are best left to snazzier nighttime events that attempt a narrower appeal.
